Make Money With Concrete Ornaments
These days, homeowners are much more likely to make a decent wage and have more disposable income. The percentage of middle to upper middle class homes is increasing and that is fueling a demand to keep these beautiful properties maintained.
With the increasing popularity of big-box home improvement stores (and their incredible selection), it’s no secret that people have taken to carving out their own niche when it comes to unique projects for their home and garden. They are no longer satisfied having their property looking like every other on the street.
One thing that has increased in popularity recently is the concrete ornament, or casting. These may come in the form of birdbaths, custom stepping stones, flower pots, statues, urns, and the list goes on…
There is a huge opportunity to make custom concrete decorative items and sell them for a substantial profit. Distinguish yourself and your unique products from the usual mass produced items that are a dime a dozen.
Purchase some inexpensive molds (these can be bought online), prep them, fill them with concrete and let them set. Remove the mold and give the concrete sufficient time to cure. You can then apply paint or glazing according to the customer’s specifications. Many people also prefer the natural look of concrete and won’t opt for any kind of coating.
Though you may think that because of the size and weight of the finished product, it would be hard to market, that’s not the case at all, as most sales are from word-of-mouth.
To kick-start your business, you might want to rent some space at the local flea market and display a selection of your wares. People will either be able to buy the item they see, or have one custom-made and delivered. Many will ask if they can have a custom color made. This can be in the form of colored concrete, or a painted coating. You will be able to charge a little more for custom orders.
Manufacturing can be done in an area of your basement or garage. Keep in mind, it might get a little messy and the finished product is going to weigh a ton.
If you plan on selling at a flea market, you’ll have to move this entire inventory several times in one day.
Alternatively, you could approach gift stores, flower shops, and garden supply stores to see if they will stock your items. Most will only agree on a consignment basis. Make sure that your company logo is stencilled in an inconspicuous place on each item. Have a tag printed with your company name, phone number, address, and any other pertinent information, and attach one to each item. Above all, don’t lose track of your inventory.
With a wide range of molds available today, there will be no problem producing unique products that are sure to catch people’s attention.
