Do you love to sew and create things that people want and need? If so, you may enjoy making money as a seamstress. You could choose to do this as your sole occupation or you could make money in this way on the side, in your free time. You might be surprised just how many people require the services of a well qualified seamstress.

Requirements

To make money as a seamstress you will need a few things. First and foremost, you need to have a love for sewing. If you don’t love to sew, this is probably not a hobby you should try to turn into a business in any shape or form. Next, you need to have a sewing machine and all associated tools. Without a sewing machine you won’t be able to provide potential customers with the service they so need. You also need to have experience in sewing many different items. If you have only sewn table clothes it may be difficult for you to start sewing clothing or other items. The good news is that you don’t need to have a degree or any specialized training to make money as a seamstress!

Your Customers

Your customers may come in all shapes and sizes. You may make clothing for one person, pillows for another, and so on. There is really no limit to what you can do as a seamstress so your potential clients are virtually unlimited! Some customers may only need one job while you may have an ongoing contract with others who need bulk orders of the same or similar items.

The Job

The wonderful thing about being a seamstress is that no two jobs are exactly the same. You can have 100 different clients with 100 different needs, which will keep you busy, put money in your pocket, and keep you feeling excited about every job.

It can be challenging to be a seamstress because every client will have different needs. In addition, it may be difficult to make a client happy if you cannot really envision what they want. This is why it is important to ask for as many details as possible and even ask for or provide sketches when possible so that you can be sure that you are creating something that will make them happy.

Seamstress work is something you will find comes in waves. Certain times of the year will be busier than others. Sometimes you will be inundated with work when other times you’ll have nothing for days or even weeks. You’ll need to plan accordingly with your budget if you plan to make this your primary source of income.

Advertising

Advertising can be done in a lot of different manners. You can ask about advertising at dress shops, school uniform supply shops, and bridal boutiques. You can also advertise in local newspapers and newsletters, and via the Internet. Once you have 10-20 customers you may find that you don’t have to work very hard to get more work because if you are good at your job and you have reasonable rates, word of mouth will take you a long, long way! Focus on affordable advertising methods that will get you the most exposure with your target audience. Consistent advertising will also help you get more consistent work, which is important to most!

How Much Can You Make?

The amount of money you can earn is dependent upon many things. First and foremost, you need to consider the clientèle you will be catering to. If you will be doing small jobs such as sewing on patches and hemming pants all the time, you are not going to make all that much. But if you also do complete jobs such as making clothes from scratch, making or altering wedding dresses, etc you are going to make more money. On average, seamstresses make about $30,000 a year. This is strictly an average, as some make a lot more and some make a lot less.

Until you are established, you should not try to live on your seamstress income alone unless you have contracts that you know will cover the bills for an extended period of time. If you are starting your own business, you may need a few months to a year to see what your actual income will be like. If you intend to work for someone else, you may be able to get a fixed salary that will allow you to live quite comfortably as a seamstress.
