Cleaning With Steam – There’s a Lot of Potential in This Niche Business

August 31st, 2008 | Posted in Start a cleaning business

Steam cleaning is one home-based venture that can quickly put you in the black. This niche business is not as mainstream as many of the other cleaning services, but the demand and potential for an above average profit certainly makes it something for the small business entrepreneur to consider.

Not to be confused with carpet cleaning (in fact, there really is no such thing as steam cleaning when it comes to cleaning carpets), real steam cleaning involves custom cleaning of floors, walls, ceilings, restaurant equipment, industrial equipment, machinery, and so on. Continue reading »

Start a Soap Making Business

August 28th, 2008 | Posted in Make Money Selling Crafts

Soap-making is an ancient art. In fact, the first recipes consisted of nothing more than animal fat, ashes, and water. Things have improved significantly over time and, today, soap is available in just about every conceivable size, color, shape, and scent you can imagine.

Many soap makers have taken their craft to a new level by adding such ingredients as herbs, dried flowers, oatmeal, exfoliants, fruit extracts, floral water, and more. You will also see items like goat’s milk, conditioners, and citrus added to produce an even greater selection, including moisturizing, aromatherapy, and certified organic. Continue reading »

Start a Construction Cleanup Service

August 27th, 2008 | Posted in Start a cleaning business

A construction cleanup service is responsible for cleaning up waste left behind at a construction site. Carpenters, electricians, plumbers, and painters are paid well to work efficiently – not to pick up any waste that is left behind. Because of this, the home or commercial site must be cleaned from top to bottom before being handed over to the buyer.

This is a business that can be started on a shoestring. Your biggest expense will be an industrial strength dust vacuum. Other than that, you’ll need brooms, mops, heavy-duty garbage bags, and miscellaneous cleaning products. Because you will be working on construction sites, you’ll need to buy adequate safety gear including steel toed boots, safety glasses, and heavy gloves. Continue reading »

Nothing increases a home’s curb appeal like a well manicured lawn. However, many of us don’t have the time or the talent to do the job ourselves. There is much more to maintaining a lawn than simply fertilizing once a year and cutting it every week. Any homeowner that is serious about lawn care knows that there is a lot of hard work, money, and know-how behind that pristine turf. Continue reading »

Start a Vegetable Stand

August 25th, 2008 | Posted in Cash Crops

With fall just around the corner, it’s almost harvest time here in Southern Ontario. In fact, I’m starting to see people selling corn, tomatoes, and other vegetables in makeshift stands by the side of the road already. This is, truly, entrepreneurial spirit at its finest.

For the next month or so, the opportunity for the consumer to buy “field fresh” produce will present itself at roadside stands, farmers markets, and flea markets. In some cases, many of these entrepreneurs will also be set up in gas station parking lots. Continue reading »

Start Growing Herbs For Profit

Professional or amateur, any serious cook will always look for the freshest ingredients they can find to give their signature dishes that extra quality. However, because of mass production, finding the freshest food and spices can be challenging. That’s why many cooks will spend the extra time to seek out smaller suppliers.

They also know that having the freshest herbs will do more for their finished product than anything else. Continue reading »

Why I Don’t Like Personal Checks – (Rant)

August 22nd, 2008 | Posted in Rants

I’m not a big fan of getting paid by check. And no, it’s not that I’ve had a problem with bad checks (in fact, I’ve only ever had one check bounce in all the years I’ve dabbled in different service based businesses).

The problem I have with being paid by personal check is that it takes more than a week for my bank to release the funds. Sure, it shows up in my balance, but if I try to make a withdrawal it won’t acknowledge the money that’s sitting there unless it’s been there a week or more. Continue reading »
